Komamura is very large in size, towering over all of the other captains. His head appears to be that of a canine, though there is some confusion to whether it is that of a wolf or a fox; He has been called a "bastard wolf" on occasion by Kenpachi Zaraki, but he has red fur like a fox, so further clarification is required.
Komamura was initially very self-conscious regarding his appearance. He hid his spiritual pressure whenever possible so that others wouldn't pay attention to his appearance. He often wears gloves and a form of covering for his head - cloth headwear in his early days, and a bamboo helm in his captain position. After his fight with Kenpachi Zaraki later in midst of the drifter invasion of Soul Society, he gained enough confidence to remove the helm.
There is little known about Komamura's past, except that he feels to owe a debt of gratitude to General Yamamoto, and became close friends with Kaname T��sen.
Komamura met with T��sen at a young age, and they took to each other quickly (one reason at that point being T��sen's inability to see what Komamura really looked like). They eventually became captains in the Gotei 13, though the exact details aren't known (it is known that they didn't defeat the previous captains of their divisions).
While Komamura fought for the General Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genry��sai and Gotei 13, T��sen fought for the justice Gotei 13 represented. Thus, when T��sen chose to side with S��suke Aizen in his betrayal of Soul Society, Komamura was shocked and felt T��sen had lost his morals. In his anger, Komamura confronted Aizen himself, but was quickly defeated when Aizen used an immensely powerful demon arts spell on him.
