Iba has a distinctive hair cut and wears black sunglasses with his standard shinigami uniform. He also smokes, thus somewhat resembling a typical yakuza gangster.
On Iba's back is a large tattoo consisting of a cat on fire, and the letters (probably read shofuku), which can be roughly translated as 'inviting luck'.
He seems to be adept at swordsmanship and demon arts. Ikkaku Madarame refers to him as well-rounded for his ability to use both, whereas Ikkaku can't use demon arts (not for lack of ability to, as much as lack of interest).
Iba was originally from the 11th Division, but transferred to the 7th Division because getting promoted in the 11th division to lieutenant was more difficult, if not impossible. It is later revealed that he wished to become a lieutenant not out of personal ambition but for the sake of his mother.
As a result, his former compatriots in the eleventh division look down upon him, as they deem the other divisions weaker than they are. Ikkaku Madarame, a friend from the 11th division, believes that his motivation to become lieutenant is somewhat foolish.
In the anime, he and Marechiyo Omaeda are defeated by the Bount Koga Gowa and his doll Daraku. |
