Inoue Orihime, She is a teenager who happens to be a classmate and friend of Ichigo Kurosaki, the protagonist of the series. Like many of Ichigo's friends, she quickly develops spiritual powers of her own after Ichigo becomes a shinigami.
Orihime lives by herself in Karakura, where the story takes place, and is supported by relatives living elsewhere. Previously, she had lived with her older brother, Sora,[1] who was fifteen years older than her. She and her brother were raised by a drunk father and a cheating mother, who always argued and beat their children to vent off steam. It is unknown if her parents are still alive.
When Sora turned 18, he ran away with Orihime, who was three years old, and raised her since. For six years, Orihime and Sora lived in harmony until he gave her a pair of hairpins, which she considered childish and refused to wear (it is later revealed that she refused to wear them because bullies picked on her and cut her hair off; she didn't want to draw attention to herself with the hairpins). On the same day, he was killed in a car accident and died in the Kurosaki clinic. Orihime has worn the hairpins ever since.
At one point in the story, it is revealed that her brother became a hollow (called Acidwire). His attachment to Orihime and the desire to protect her kept him in this world as a ghost. In the anime he was devoured by other hollows and thus was turned into a hollow. In the manga, however, his feelings of loneliness (because Orihime seemed to forget him, as she stopped praying regularly for him once she became friends with Tatsuki) took hold, and he became a hollow over time in the way most hollows do. We only see him as a fully formed hollow, though. After this, Acidwire attacked Ichigo and Tatsuki, who he blamed for making Orihime forget him. She is saved by Ichigo and this event serves as the starting point for the development of her powers, even though neither she nor the reader know about it until later.
After this event, Rukia Kuchiki appeared to clear her memory of the incident, but it was later revealed during Ichigo and Ishida's "duel" that Orihime had never really forgotten the previous battle. Instead, she simply refused to remember it because she couldn't bear seeing her brother Sora and her crush Ichigo fight each other over her.
Orihime's powers initially manifested during the duel between Ichigo and Ishida when she wished to protect her friend Tatsuki from Numb Chandelier, one of the hollows which Ishida lured using his hollow bait. She was trained by Yoruichi Shihouin along with Chad, in how to use her powers before she, Chad, and Ishida joined Ichigo in an attempt to rescue Rukia Kuchiki from being executed at the Soul Society. Her powers have been repeatedly noted as being both unique and very powerful, by Shinigami Research Institute President Mayuri Kurotsuchi among others.
Orihime Inoue and two fairies (Tsubaki and Shun'ou) from the Six Flowers of the Hibiscus Shield. Her powers are linked to her two hairclips (shaped like six-petaled flowers), gifts to her from her brother who has died, and her powers appear to her as spirit forms of her personality. These spirit forms are manifestations of Orihime's spirit and work in three teams. They are all named after flowers and each have their own unique appearance and personality. Collectively they are known as the Shun Shun Rikka (lit. six flowers of the hibiscus shield). Individually they are named Shun'ou (lit. althea + cherry blossom), Ayame (lit. iris), Tsubaki (lit. camellia), Hinagiku (lit. daisy*), Baigon (lit. solemn ume), and Lily.
* - Hinagiku means daisy phonetically, but the kanji are different. Individually these kanji can mean 'Invisible fire chrysanthemum'.
Orihime generally uses her powers to heal or form shields to protect her friends. Her healing abilities are especially strong, likely more so than even the 3rd Seat of the Gotei 13's 4th Division. They involve manipulating the time and space continuum, which makes them unique.
Her combat abilities are rather weak, despite the potential to do lethal damage using Tsubaki, partly as a result of her unwillingness to harm opponents in any way. So far she's only killed one hollow, likely because of the desire to protect Tatsuki rather than to destroy the hollow. It is speculated that Orihime does not have the power to defeat a seated shinigami, based on the fight against 7th Division 4th Seat Jiroubou Ikkanzaka. This is not fact however, considering a 4th seat is not just any seated shinigami, and Orihime didn't have the incentive to kill Jiroubou.
Additionally, thanks to training from Tatsuki, Orihime can fight at the first degree black belt level in karate. She also has the uncanny ability to detect Ichigo by scent.
In chapter 222, she is also the only known person who is able to detect Ichigo's spiritual pressure, which is astonishing considering it's being masked by the vizard. This might be due to her powers which are similar to the techniques of the vizard Hachigen. In chapter 228, Orihime has met with Hachigen, who explains the similarity of their powers and heals Tsubaki for her. He also remarks that her hairpins are like a zanpakutou, but doesn't elaborate further. She spends the time since then training with Rukia in Soul Society, and in chapter 233 crosses back into the human world with two unnamed shinigami bodyguards. She is intercepted by Ulquiorra, who reveals that Sousuke Aizen is interested in her powers. When she refuses to go with him, he brutally dismembers her two escorts. While healing them, Ulquiorra gives Orihime a choice, join him, or watch her friends die. Orihime is unaware of both Urahara and the vizard helping fight, and not wanting to see her friends get hurt, relents
